Henkel Launches Fully Automatic Dishwashing Dosing System

Henkel is rolling out Somat Smartwash, an autonomous, fully automatic dishwashing detergent dosing system that continuously adjusts the dosing of different components to the requirements of each individual wash cycle.  The unit houses detergent, rinse aid, salt and machine care.

The device is placed in the lower basket of the dishwasher and can remain there permanently. Henkel says it is compatible with standard household dishwashers across different brands.

The new technology will be available in Germany selected online and retail channels, according to Henkel.

“With Somat Smartwash, we are making dishwashing easier than ever before. The system thinks ahead, automatically adapts product dispensing to every phase of the wash cycle and delivers excellent results. At the same time, the Smartwash app provides greater transparency and enables consumers to personalize the experience according to their individual needs. For us, Somat Smartwash is also an important step in further exploring the potential of connected technologies and their role in future product concepts,” noted Verena Zander, corporate VP new technologies at Henkel Consumer Brands.

Sensors monitor temperature and movement patterns while analyzing the progress of the selected program in real time. The system then identifies the different phases of the wash cycle and releases each formulation to maximize cleaning performance while enhancing shine and drying results. The timing and amount of product release are continuously adapted to the actual conditions of each wash cycle, from short programs to energy-efficient eco cycles at low temperatures.

For plastic items, Smartwash supports improved drying performance, according to Henkel.

Connected App

There is also a connected app. Users receive usage and consumption information and are notified when refills are required. They can also reorder products through the app.

In addition, Henkel says the app enables personalized settings and individual adjustments.
